چکیده

An importance sampling simulation technique is used to estimate the bit-error rate (BER) of a symbol-by-symbol trelliscoded modulation (TCM) decoder/equalizer proposed for digital microwave radio applications. To evaluate the performance at a BER smaller than 10 , we investigate a randomized bias technique previously developed by the authors. To properly select the bias vectors, the asymptotic (infinite signal-to-noise ratio) decision boundary is first determined. The simulation technique is then extended to the one-shot symbol-by-symbol TCM decoding/equalization algorithm which is equivalent to the recursive symbol-bysymbol detection algorithm of Abend and Fritchman. By using this novel importance sampling technique, we can speed up the simulation and efficiently evaluate the BER performance of the TCM decoder/equalizer.

Low Complexity Decoding for Punctured Trellis-Coded Modulation Over Intersymbol Interference Channels

Classical trellis-coded modulation (TCM) as introduced by Ungerboeck in 1976/1983 uses a signal constellation of twice the cardinality compared to an uncoded transmission with one bit of redundancy per PAM symbol, i.e., application of codes with rates n−1 n when 2 denotes the cardinality of the signal constellation. The original approach therefore only comprises integer transmission rates, i.e....

New results about analysis and design of TCM for ISI channels and combined equalization/decoding

In this letter new upper bounds for the performance of the optimum combined symbol-by-symbol (SbS) Abend–Fritchman-like equalizer and decoder are presented, and a related criterion for the actual design of good trellis-coded-modulated (TCM) schemes effectively matched to the distortion introduced by the intersymbol interference (ISI)-corrupted transmission channel is developed. The actual appli...

TCMs Matched to ISI Channels: New Results for Combined Symbol-by-Symbol Equalization and Decoding

(1) This work was partially supported by European Union under the ACTS AC104 MOSTRAIN project. Abstract: The design of good TCM schemes matched to ISI channels requires that analytical performance bounds are also available. In this paper, starting from an application of the unionBhattacharyya bound, upper-bounds for the performance of the theoretically optimum combined Symbol-by-Symbol (SbS) Ab...

On the performance limits of TCM in fast-fading multipath channels with combined equalization/decoding

In this contribution we present some analytical performance bounds that point out the key parameters dominating the performance of symbol-by-symbol combined-type maximum a posteriori equalizers/decoders for trellis-coded modulation (TCM) transmissions over fast-faded intersymbol-interference-impaired Rayleigh-channels with diversity reception. Guidelines are also provided for the design of good...

On Symbol Timing Recovery in All-digital Receivers

Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) currently achieves a bandwidth efficiency (η ) of 0.5 to 1.0 bps/Hz by using traditional modulation schemes, such as, BPSK and QFSK. SNL has an interest in increasing the present bandwidth efficiency by a factor of 4 or higher with the same allocated bandwidth (about 10 MHz). Simulations have shown that 32QAM trellis-coded modulation (TCM) gives a good bit err...
